I met Sue Lean (shown here) at the opening of the “Votes for Women” exhibit at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY last November. We’d been in touch on the phone and by way of email. Sue stands out for her enthusiasm about suffrage centennials as well as the terrific vintage outfits she wears, including this sash that commemorates the 2017 suffrage centennial in NYS. Now she’s appealing to others to join the League of Women Voters of Washington and Fix Democracy First in Olympia, WA on January 24, 2018 for Democracy Lobby Day.

Sue Lean testified this past week in Washington State on proposed legislation, SSB 5780, that would make provisions to commemorate the centennial of national women’s suffrage. She’s appealing to others to join in Olympia, WA to meet with legislators, receive a hands-on advocacy training, and connect with like-minded people across the state. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE U.K.

“Telling Her Story: Women’s History, Heritage and the Built Environment” is scheduled for Monday, March 19, 2018 in the UK, 9:30 am TO 5:00 pm, Wrest Park, Bedfordshire. ‘Telling Her Story’ will bring together heritage professionals and academics to explore the diverse roles and experiences of women at historic sites. Whether in country houses or castles, women have played a pivotal role in influencing the course of history. Yet, as we are well aware, our voices are marginalised, missing from the historical record and from interpretation at heritage sites.

This event intends to uncover the many and varied experiences of women at historic properties in the care of English Heritage and other heritage organizations. It aims to move beyond stock biographies of famous women to discover the many diverse stories of women from all walks of life, to offer new perspectives on better-known individuals and to critique narratives and interpretations which continue to be constructed principally around the experiences of men. Tickets are available by calling +44(0) 370 333 1183. Tickets: £30 (a limited number of free tickets for students/ unwaged are available).
