This award-winning video by Eighty Bug about the “Spirit of 1776” suffrage wagon is a classic in terms of capturing the spirit of grassroots organizing behind decades of American women organizing and struggling to win the right to vote. Although the 19th Amendment guaranteed this right to women in 1920, the struggle continues.

BREAKING NEWS: Meredith Bergmann has been chosen to be the sculptor for the Central Park statue of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Her preliminary model will be on exhibit at the New York Historical Society until the end of July. The completed statue will be unveiled in August of 2020 on the Literary Walk on the Mall in Central Park (NYC).

FROM MARGUERITE KEARNS:

The “Spirit of 1776” suffrage wagon used by Edna Kearns and others in New York City and Long Island in 1913 stood on display proudly at the New York State Museum during the 2017 suffrage centennial when NYS women observed the 100 years of their winning the right to vote. I have been working hard on a book about what it has been like to be the descendant of suffrage activists. It’s a revealing story as much about myself as family members. The long journey has involved imagination, storytelling, dreaming—all of this a process of finding my own voice.
