A column by Marguerite Kearns
The story about the big 1913 parade and suffrage demonstration in Washington, DC was handed down to me in my family. My grandmother Edna Kearns wrote in a column in the Southside Observer of Long Island in 1913 that the men marchers caused numerous challenges back in the days when they were in the front lines of social change.
My grandfather Wilmer Kearns marched in the men’s division and was indignant about the Washington, DC police response. Many men associated with the early women’s rights movement were radicalized by the experience. They hissed the city police chief. This horrified my grandmother, according to her published account.
