There is no point being shocked. The ending of this tale could have been predicted. People change. They know nothing and then embark on projects above their heads. Social change is slow, and sometimes injustice never changes.

Now Pepper Schwartz is saying something. What is it? Speak louder.

“The history of marital change is widely known. The women’s movement made women aware that they did not have a fair deal in most spheres of their life, and they started to demand more standing and more ability to set some of the terms of their intimate relationships. Men resisted some of these demands, but, particularly after the 1970s,  there was a wide agreement that relationships should be more equal, fairer, and less separated  by sex role  distinctions. The surprise is not that marriage should change; rather , it is that  more change has not happened, that most marriages remain hierarchical.”

The same is true of women’s history. It remains marginal and almost invisible unless there is a holiday or relevant centennial.
